Course Description

A four semester program, to enable graduate students to pursue doctoral studies or professional employment, through imparting in depth knowledge in plant biology along with one semester independent research project.

Curriculum

1st Year

Autumn Term

Autumn Term is the first/odd semester of an academic session/year.

CRYPTOGAMES

Provide an understanding of the structural and functional aspects of Cryptogams.

BOTANY LABORATORY-I

Enhances practical skill of the students, when they study actual specimens in the laboratory and inculcate critical thinking in the students, when they analyze various species of plant diversity.

PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

Impart knowledge of plant physiology to the students that will be helpful to them to increase yield of agricultural crops.

BIOMOLECULES AND METABOLISM

Provide an understanding of the structure, properties and metabolism of biomolecules.

MOLECULAR GENETICS LABORATORY

Provide hands-on experience of handling biomolecules and impart an in-depth knowledge of molecular genetics experiments.

GENETIC

Provide an understanding of Inheritance and different aspects of genetics.

BIOSTATISTICS

Provide knowledge to use statistics in the field of biosciences. will enhance the knowledge of sampling distribution and probability distribution.

Spring Term

Spring Term is the second/even semester of an academic session/year.

PHANEROGAMES

Provide an understanding of the biological diversity of Phanergames, structural and functional aspects of Phanerogams and different phanerogams groups.

BOTANY LABORATORY-II

Enhances practical skill of the students, when they study actual specimens in the laboratory. It also develops analytical thinking of students while interpreting the experimental results.

MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF ANGIOSPERMS

Provides an understanding of the angiosperm morphological, anatomical changes to adapt in the environment and the types of tissue ,tissue systems and patterns.

TAXONOMY OF ANGIOSPERMS

Create awareness about the origin and diversity of angiosperms and familiarize the learners with the taxonomic features and economic importance of different plant families.

PLANT MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Impart the knowledge about the structure and function of nucleic acid, various levels of gene regulation and protein function in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

SCIENTIFIC WRITINGS AND ETHICS

Develop skills that will enable students to produce clear and effective scientific and technical documents. It also highlights the importance of communicating scientific research and also acquaint students about norms of academic honesty by avoiding plagiarism.

ANALYTICAL SKILLS

Emphasizes on solving logical quantitative and reasoning problems for competitive exams.

2nd Year

Autumn Term

Autumn Term is the first/odd semester of an academic session/year.

PLANT REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Provide information on mechanism of reproduction and embryology in plants.

PLANT ECOLOGY

Provide basic concept of environmental relationship with plants. Familiarize with various aspects of embryology and critics of nature.

PLANT TISSUE CULTURE

Develop understanding about basic aspects of plant tissue culture, cell cloning, regeneration process with an overview of various techniques used for industrial scale production of plants.

PLANT TISSUE CULTURE LABORATORY

Provide hands on experience of inducting, maintaining and handling plants cells and culture in laboratory conditions. Provide insight into the growth patterns of plant cells grown in controlled environment.

SOFT SKILLS

Develop argumentation and debate skills.

Spring Term

PLANT RESOURCE UTILIZATION AND CONSERVATION

Impart knowledge among the students regarding with various economic aspects of plants and understanding about application of unexploited plants of economic value and conservation of genetic resources.

PROJECT

Provides the hands-on experience on the preparation of project work, writing the manuscript for publication consideration and preparation of power point presentation.

APPLIED ASPECTS OF PLANT GENETIC MANIPULATION

Familiarize with the basic concept of transfer of genes by recombinant DNA technology and its application in production of genetically modifies and transgenic crops.

SEED TECHNOLOGY

Impart knowledge to students on concepts of quality seed production of field crops.

GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF CROP PLANTS

Impart knowledge to the students on the principles of plant breeding, procedures in self and cross pollinated crops and various population improvement programmes.

PLANT TOXICOLOGY

Provide information of pollutants and other current climate debacles and its management with emphasis on Phytoremediation techniques.

ADVANCES IN PLANT STRESS PHYSIOLOGY

Provide information of responses exhibited by the plants towards extreme conditions of the environment along with emphasis on genetic regulation in plants.

STRESS AND MOLECULAR GENETICS OF PLANTS

Provide knowledge on the biotic and abiotic stresses that are affecting plant growth and development and associated genetics.

SOIL ECOLOGY AND XENOBIOTICS

Focuses on the interactions among soil organisms, and between biotic and abiotic aspects of the soil environment.
